Calvert County Schools Get Another Big Increase

Author: I think it was the Calvert Independent’s headline that caught my eye at the market. The school district is spending even more money. Seven percent increase the article said. I have to ask if anyone has really noticed. Maryland property taxes have SKYROCKETED the last three years. Despite the downturn in the real estate market the state still thinks my house is worth a small fortune when I know damned well I couldn’t sell it for the appraised value. The State of Maryland and Calvert County have their greedy hands in our pockets. Spending is out of control. The school district sure seems to have a blank check during a time when money is short and business is getting much worse. Something has to change. The taxpayer is a FINITE source of funds. We cannot continue to fund spend crazy politicians and their pet projects. Someone has to start acting like the County and the school district is a business with limited resources. Over HALF of the thousands I pay in state and local taxes goes to the schools. Why so much when medical and fire and police are inadequately funded? When was the last time you listened to a police scanner and heard the last call for a medic, medic not available? We don’t pay our medics or our firefighters but we have an endless supply of dollars to fund a small army of school buses every morning to get kids to school. Something is very wrong with government priorities in Calvert County, MD. Very wrong.
