Private Beach or Public Beach?

We live in a private community. We have a sign at the entrance stating that it is a private community. There is one way in and one way out. Nowhere is there public parking for beach access by car. At each beach entrance there is a chain and a no parking sign.

Despite this, some visitors to our neighborhood seem to think they can park wherever they feel like it and walk to the beach. There are signs at the beach that indicate the beach is for the use of Neeld Estate residents and their guests. Each cheater has to drive or walk by two or three signs sharing the who has what right of passage. Pretty clear it seems to me.

Those of us that own homes pay the humongous local and state property taxes for the privilege to have private beach access. It seems unfair that a cheater can drive in and park on a private lawn so he/she can use the beach instead of going next door and paying to use the county beach at Breezy Point. It’s rude. When I challenged one of the cheaters I got a silly answer and a dirty stare. Anyone visiting a friend would be parking near the friend’s home. Perhaps we should go camp in his front yard?

Taxpayer Alert!: Fireworks WASTE at Breezy Point Campground

Annually, Calvert County government throws taxpayer dollars up in smoke allowing a massive fireworks display at Breezy Point Campground. Tonight the unexpected explosions of rude next-door neighbors remind us of years past and probably years to come.

Why? Why is the county doing this? It’s just dumb. The thrills of a bunch of transient residents are placed above property tax payers next door looking for a little piece and quiet in the homes we pay EXCESSIVE property taxes for. Good grief commissioners, whats next? Perhaps we should bring fireworks to your homes at 9:00 PM some evening on an annual basis? These displays do nothing but encourage illegal use of fireworks.

Question? Are VALUABLE public safety resources tied up with this? Fire, police, EMS? How many county employees are on overtime? How much does this annual up-in-smoke cost us?

Southern Maryland Celtic Festival, April 25, 2009

Think ahead to April 25, 2009 and plan to attend the thirty-first Celtic Festival of Southern Maryland. This festival is, in my personal opinion, the best around. You cannot go wrong attending this event. I go for the bag pipes, fiddle music, dancing, and the food!

The festival is always the last Saturday of April each year and is held rain or shine at Jefferson Patterson Park in Calvert County. The festival details are located at the Celtic Society of Southern Maryland website – and yes my spouse and I are members!

Join us this April 25 at the Celtic Festival. The entire family will love it! Whether or not you have Celtic roots this very musical and very cultural event is lots of fun. You can purchase tickets in advance and save three dollars on an adult ticket and two dollars on a child’s ticket (ages 6-12 paid, 5 and under free) so consider getting your tickets before April 1, 2009.

The Southern Maryland Celtic Society held it’s annual Medieval Feast on 1 November 2008 at the St. James Church Great Hall in Lothian, MD. A good time was had by all. Guests attended wearing period clothing and several guests played sang or played musical instruments.

The seven course meal was absolutely wonderful.

My spouse and I are recent members of the Society. The group puts on the annual Celtic Festival held in Calvert County. The groups activities are great fun. I encourage you to visit the society’s website and to participle in their activities. You will be glad you did.

Who is Watching the Calvert School Board?

The financial world around us is collapsing and the Calvert County School Board is telling the Recorder that they are oh so happy about the 57 million they plan on spending to rebuild Calvert High School. Everybody’s property tax check in Calvert County Maryland sends better than 50% of that money to this spend thrift organization. They build and and build and build. There’s no telling them no! Who is watching the Calvert County School District? Who is reigning in spending during hard times? Is there a conservative voice on the school board maybe saying this really isn’t the time? It just completely amazes me that this Board knows no bounds! They PLAN on tax increases before they happen. That’s how sure they are of themselves. They can fleece the citizens here with apparently no oversight. It is high time people started complaining and the Board starts to justify why they can’t do without during hard times for everyone else. What do you think?

City Elects First Black Mayor

This Chesapeake Bay city of idled crab processing plants and costly vacation homes has had a not-too-distant history of racial strife. But when Cambridge elected its first black mayor this week, residents said their worries about joblessness and the economy were foremost on their minds — not the race or gender of the winning candidate. A Neeld Estate 4th

2008_07044JULYNEELD0357 The 4th of July celebration has come and gone. A parade and a BBQ and games for the kids. A fun time was had by all. The neighborhood descended on Pat’s house. Our old location is now occupied by a new home under construction. The only disagreeable bunch this year were the purple martins who were more than a little upset all the humans had surrounded the bird house.2008_07044JULYNEELD0364

Old acquaintances were renewed and new friends were met.  The kids had a  blast with the three-legged run, the egg toss, and the piñata.  Some of us got some sun and stuck our toes in the Bay, others enjoyed the shade of Pat’s hideaway. That’s Pat on right, she rocks! I recognize Jean in this shot. She’s here with the Captain, Captain Buddy and his grand daughter.  2008_07044JULYNEELD0362

Now these two were discussing something important I’m sure. Maybe they were planning a ride in the golf cart around the beach or perhaps a trip to the Smith’s who own the old Odger’s place to pick wild flowers.

2008_07044JULYNEELD0352

Our oldest visitor Vicki was 93! She was living in the neighborhood when she gave birth to Sue on the right. That’s my Eileen in the middle. The gals are swapping stories about Vicki’s ride on the jet ski when she was 90.

2008_07044JULYNEELD0343

The big guys like my neighbor and I hung around the hot dog stand. There were plenty of condiments. The weather cooperated this year. The thunder and lightning happened about six hours later and it wasn’t too hot or too cold.

2008_07044JULYNEELD0350

We all a blast celebrating our country’s birthday at Neeld Estate, in Calvert County, Maryland.
